SoulGold cheats: why Emerald codes do not work, and what to use instead
SoulGold cheats aren't supported and can corrupt your save. Why Emerald codes miss, what the code sites really offer, and the built-in options to use instead.
Short answer
There are no supported SoulGold cheats, and they can corrupt your save. Emerald GameShark and Action Replay codes don't work because SoulGold is built on pokeemerald-expansion, with different item, species, move and save layouts, so the codes write to the wrong memory. Use the built-in options instead, like level caps on None, Exp. Share, the Candy Jar, level scaling, speed toggles, DexNav, guaranteed-catch bosses and the VS Seeker.
Don’t use cheats in SoulGold. They aren’t supported, they can corrupt your save, and I can’t vouch for any code you find online. The game’s own options cover almost everything people want codes for, so use those.
Cheats aren’t supported
The author’s answer to “are there any cheats?” is no. Cheats are likely to corrupt your save, and you shouldn’t trust third-party sites offering them. That hasn’t changed through 1.2.1 on 21 October 2026. Nothing in the 1.2 and 1.2.1 changes adds cheat support, and every update shuffles data around. I’ve never run a code on my own file, and I sleep better for it.
Why Emerald codes miss
GameShark, Action Replay and CodeBreaker codes are just memory addresses. A money code writes a number where Emerald keeps your money. A Mart code writes an item ID where the shop looks. A wild encounter code writes a species ID into the encounter slot. They only work if the game keeps the same addresses and the same IDs.
SoulGold doesn’t. It’s built on RHH’s pokeemerald-expansion (version 1.15), with the Heart & Soul Johto assets ported on and expanded. So nothing lines up:
- The Candy Jar alone is item number 887.
- There are 959 species and form entries, including 118 Megas.
- There are 849 moves and 19 PC boxes.
- There’s an extra save block for the Candy Jar’s banked EXP and the 121 trophies.
So an Emerald money code hits whatever SoulGold stores at that address. Sometimes nothing visible happens. Sometimes it writes garbage into a save block, and that’s your corrupted save. That’s the corruption the author warns about. It’s a dull way to lose a save you’ve put real hours into.
About the “SoulGold cheat code” sites
Some sites post code lists for SoulGold 1.1 or 1.2. Read their fine print before you try anything. Between them, they admit:
- The codes had to be rebuilt because Emerald codes don’t work.
- They only match one version’s checksum and break on updates.
- Teleport, warp and move codes were expected to fail.
- Codes from other versions crashed the game.
- One list was built on a pre-release demo.
Two of the lists don’t even agree on whether the shiny encounter code works.
The checksum changes every release, and 1.2.1 came out on 21 October 2026, after every list I found was last updated. I haven’t tested any of these codes, I don’t print them here, and I wouldn’t run them on a save I cared about. If you do it anyway:
- Save in-game.
- Back up the save file.
- Turn on one code at a time.
- Turn it off before you save.
What to use instead
Most cheat searches are after EXP, money, catches, shinies or less waiting. SoulGold has a safe answer for each.
EXP and levels
- Level caps: None. Set caps to None, Soft or Hard in Options. None gives full EXP at every level and removes the cap that sends people hunting for Rare Candy codes. Soft divides EXP above the cap by 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 per level over, and boosts it below. Level caps and Hard mode has the full list.
- Exp. Share shows up before Violet City and is on by default. Trainer battles give 1.2 times the normal EXP.
- Candy Jar. Elm’s aide gives it to you after the first gym. Every time a foe faints, it banks 90 percent of that foe’s EXP on top of what your team gets. Use it to turn the bank into Exp Candies. That’s your Rare Candy supply.
- Level scaling in Options keeps trainers just behind your party’s average and wild ‘mons 8 to 10 levels below it.
- Late game: a Kitakami trainer with Audino and Blissey who charges 10,000 a fight, and Exp Candy XL in the Battle Tower shop.
Money and items
- Pickup sends items to your bag even if the holder already has one.
- Farm Wide Lenses off the Route 35 Yanma with Covet or Thief. They sell well and chain with DexNav.
- After eight badges, the Battle Factory sells Nuggets and Big Nuggets for BP. In the postgame, the Rocket Arcade pays cash.
- You can buy every IV and EV fix. Feathers raise an IV by 5 each. Hyper Training with Bottle Caps is in Rinto Village. EX vitamins max a stat. Zeromin resets EVs. The IV-lowering herbs are in Goldenrod Underground.
Catching
- Boss legendaries are a guaranteed catch with any ball once you beat them. You don’t need a catch code.
- Kurt’s daily gift can be a Master Ball. From your 5th daily visit on, it’s a 1 in 16 roll each day, no Apricorn needed. Save it for anything that isn’t a boss. The Masterpiece trophy tracks it.
- Roamer tracker: after the Burned Tower, press R on the region map. It blinks when a roamer is on your route. Roamers can’t flee while asleep.
Shinies
- Shiny odds are 1 in 256 by default, and you can set 1 in 512 or 1 in 1024. There are no shiny locks anywhere, NPC trades included. Shiny Day Care parents raise the odds on their eggs.
- DexNav unlocks with your first Poké Balls. Chaining raises your rare-slot and shiny odds, with bonuses at 50 and 100. It’s the closest thing to a cheat I ever wanted.
- Shiny Genome makes any Pokémon you own shiny. You get one at 15 trophies, and the Rocket Arcade and Battle Café sell more after the credits. Use it on roamers, since they roll shiny when they’re released.
- Hidden Grottos give two perfect IVs and the Hidden Ability, so you don’t need hidden ability codes.
Less waiting
- Fast megas, Fast weather and Fast HMs skip the Mega animation, the repeat weather text and the HM prompt.
- OW speed goes up to 4x (hold R for 1x) and Battle speed to 3x (hold L for 1x). Move selection stays at normal speed. Turn Battle scene off to skip most animations.
- The VS Seeker from the Radio Tower quiz recharges after 200 steps and resets the route trainers. You don’t need a rematch code.
On Hard, I leaned on all of these. The Candy Jar and the tutor master kept new catches caught up, and 3x battle speed got the Elite Four rematches done in an evening instead of a week.
If your save is already corrupted
- Stop playing on it. Every save overwrites your only copy.
- Copy the save file out right now, even if it looks broken.
- Re-patch a clean Emerald base with the official 1.2.1 patch.
- Put the backed-up save next to the fresh build and try to load it. How to play a Pokémon ROM hack walks you through re-patching.
If it still fails, don’t report it as a bug. Cheats aren’t supported, and the author doesn’t owe you a fix for a save a code broke. If you can make the same thing happen on a fresh save that never had a code, report that on the hack’s Discord or on the author’s GitHub.
If you can’t, start a new game with Level caps on None. It’s barely slower than the code would have been. Starting over stings, I know. The SoulGold FAQ has the rest of the setup questions.
Frequently asked questions
Are there GameShark or Action Replay codes for Pokémon SoulGold?
None from the author, and none supported. They can corrupt your save, and the author warns you off third-party sites that offer them. I don't publish or test any SoulGold codes here.
Why do Pokémon Emerald cheat codes not work in SoulGold?
SoulGold is built on pokeemerald-expansion, which moves the item, species and move numbers, the save layout and the memory addresses Emerald codes aim at. An Emerald code writes into whatever SoulGold keeps at that spot, and that's how saves get corrupted.
How do I get Rare Candies or fast EXP in SoulGold without cheats?
Set Level caps to None, keep Exp. Share on, and use the Candy Jar. Every time a foe faints, it also banks 90 percent of that foe's EXP, on top of what your team gets, and turns it into Exp Candies. Later on, grind the Kitakami Audino and Blissey trainer and buy Exp Candy XL at the Battle Tower.
Is there a Master Ball cheat for SoulGold?
You don't need one. Every boss legendary is a guaranteed catch with any ball once you beat it, and from your 5th daily visit on, Kurt's daily gift has a 1 in 16 chance to be a Master Ball. The Masterpiece trophy tracks it.
What do I do if a cheat corrupted my SoulGold save?
Stop playing and copy the save file as it is. Re-patch a clean Emerald base with the official 1.2.1 patch and try loading it. If it still breaks, only report it if you can make it happen on a save that never had a cheat on it.
