About Beyond Kanto
Beyond Kanto is a guide site for fan-made Pokémon games, the ROM hacks that rebuild a Game Boy Advance or DS game with new regions, hundreds more Pokémon, Mega Evolution, and harder difficulty modes.
Who writes it
Wes Mahogany writes every guide. Wes has finished more fan-made Pokémon games than official ones. Beyond Kanto is where the notes from those playthroughs end up: verified against each game’s official documentation, written for people who want the answer first.
Wes is a pen name. The person behind it has no connection to any hack's development team, to Nintendo, or to any emulator project, and makes no money from anyone featured here other than through the display ads on this site.
How guides are made
- Tier 1 games (currently Pokémon SoulGold) are finished, including the postgame, before anything is published. Guides mix what the playthrough taught with the game's official documentation, and every page says which patch version it was checked against.
- Tier 2 games (currently Pokémon Unbound) are games finished to the credits and most of the postgame. Guides are narrower and lean more on official documentation.
- Everything else appears only in comparison and ranking articles, which say plainly when a game was not played to completion.
When a hack updates, the guide that depends on the changed content gets a "checked against" date update after the facts are re-verified. Corrections are welcome through the contact page.
What the site will never do
- Host, mirror, or link to ROM files, pre-patched games, or anything that contains Nintendo's code. Guides link to each creator's official documentation and nothing else.
- Publish a walkthrough for a game nobody here has finished.
- Pad guides with filler to hit a word count. The answer goes at the top.
