SoulGold 1.2 and 1.2.1: what changed and is your save safe?
Every SoulGold change from 1.2 to the 21 October 1.2.1 patch: balance, new content, quality of life and fixes, plus how to keep your save and check your version.
Short answer
Yes, your save is safe if you move forward. A 1.1.x or 1.2 save loads in 1.2.1. You can't go back, and once you save on a 19-box build (1.1 or later) the old 16-box versions won't read it. 1.2.1 (21 October 2026) is small: dark mode in more screens, three new chat frames, a battle status screen on SELECT, PC box search, a roamer sleep fix and the missing Axew egg moves.
None of these updates break your save. SoulGold went from 1.2 (3 October 2026) through two fix batches to 1.2.1 on 21 October 2026. Below is what each one changed and how to check which one you have.
Is your save safe?
Yes, as long as you only go forward. A save from 1.1.4 or 1.2 loads straight into 1.2.1. You can’t go back to an older version.
The one wall is the PC box jump in 1.1, from 16 boxes to 19. Once you save on a 19-box build, a 16-box build can’t load it. That move was tested on mGBA, real hardware and Pizza Boy, so those are the three I’d trust with it. Other emulators are untested. If you’re still on a pre-1.1 build, back up your save first. I backed mine up before every patch this month.
Two 1.1.x fixes repair old saves on load, so you don’t have to do anything:
- A Safari Zone flag that could lock the side areas forever if you skipped them before the Elite Four.
- A Goldenrod Underground softlock if you saved inside the shutter walls.
What 1.2 changed
Most of 1.2 had already shipped as 1.1.4 patches. If you patched in late September, you already had about 95 percent of it. If you’re jumping straight from 1.1, this is your full list.
Balance
- Elite Four rematch and Title Defense teams changed. My gym leader and boss guide has the new ones.
- Battle Pyramid got a big pass:
- Full Heal in your starting bag
- Bigger flash range that grows with each trainer you beat
- Beaten trainers always point you to the teleporter
- One guaranteed recovery item per floor
- Lum Berries instead of single-status cures
- Fewer encounters, with different flee odds
- New wild ‘mons at the higher tiers
- Battle Factory starting rentals changed.
- Audino gives more EXP.
- Dark Void is 75 percent accurate now. Drum Beating counts as a sound move. Maneuverability now covers 60 BP moves.
- New moves:
- Kabutops: Stone Axe and Aqua Cutter
- Sceptile: Sacred Sword
- Ambipom: Karate Chop and Power-Up Punch
- Pawmot: Drain Punch
- Pidgeot: Focus Blast
- New innates for Pidgeot, Arbok, Wigglytuff, Poliwrath, Farfetch’d, Mr. Mime, Sudowoodo, Jumpluff, Delibird, Rotom-Mow, Uxie, Regigigas, Phione, Hisuian Samurott, Hisuian Braviary, Appletun, Cyclizar, Tatsugiri, Roaring Moon and Iron Leaves.
- TM75 is Agility now instead of Swords Dance. You can still get Swords Dance from a tutor.
New content and behaviour changes
- Follower sprites for most starter Megas. Mega Primarina came later on 16 October, and Mega Meowscarada is still missing.
- Paradox “legendaries” respawn after Title Defense, and you don’t need them for the dex anymore. If you missed Roaring Moon, relax.
- Roamers can’t flee while asleep, but they run the second they wake up. 1.2.1 tightened this further.
- Shiny parents in the Day Care raise the shiny odds of their eggs.
- Peat Block and Black Augurite are sold at Indigo Plateau.
Quality of life
- Options got fast HM animations and a Battle Music picker: Default, Kanto, FRLG, RSE, D/P/Pt or Random.
- Pokémon Centers have night music.
- The party menu has a dark mode.
- Poison and Toxic have their own status icons.
I set Battle Music to Random on day one and never touched it again.
Bug fixes
1.2 itself only ported some general fixes. The named ones came in the two October batches below.
The 8 and 16 October fixes
If you patched after 16 October, you have both.
8 October:
- Surf sprites for regional forms like Clodsire
- Honchkrow learns Oblivion Wing by level-up
- Simple plus Belly Drum no longer overflows into a negative boost
- Lance’s mugshot is back in the Rocket Hideout scene
- The Game Corner Dropspin “No” option no longer breaks later dialogue
- Typo fixes
- Battle facility RNG now moves while you wait, so facility runners can’t get locked into one roll
16 October:
- Follower sprites for Mega Primarina and partner Eevee
- Wall clocks light up the time of day
- The Day Care stops showing levels past the cap
- No more reset when shiny Mega Greninja lands from Surf on certain tiles
- Clefable learns Air Slash
- Hidden Grotto Pokémon can be shiny in the overworld
A grotto Pokémon that isn’t shiny in the overworld still rolls again when the battle starts. So the overworld shiny is a bonus chance on top. That grotto change is the one I was happiest to see.
What 1.2.1 changed (21 October 2026)
This is the first patch that changes the version on the continue screen. Six things:
- Dark mode on more screens.
- Three new chat frames. Your old frames 1, 2 and 3 moved to 21, 22 and 23. If your text box looks different after patching, that’s why.
- A battle status screen. Press SELECT in battle. I use it in nearly every boss fight now.
- PC box search. Press the box number in the PC, the same menu as mass release.
- Sleeping roamers can’t pick flee instead of attacking anymore.
- Missing egg moves, like First Impression for the Axew line.
The game won’t tell you to update. The Docs button in the start menu still thinks v1.2 is the newest, and GitHub shows one v1.2 release with the October batches added on. Treat “1.2” on GitHub and “1.2.1” on your continue screen as the same build.

Were gym teams or encounters changed?
Yes, a few, across 1.1.x to 1.2.1:
- Normal mode Jasmine, Chuck and Pryce had their difficulty smoothed out in 1.1.2 and 1.1.3.
- The Goldenrod Rocket event call fires after any seven badges, in any order. I took my badges out of order, so I was glad of that one.
- Elite Four rematch and Title Defense teams changed in 1.2.
- Cursola showed up in Rinto Village waters in 1.1.4.
- The Battle Pyramid’s higher-tier wild ‘mons changed in 1.2.
- Paradox Pokémon respawn now.
My gym leader teams and encounter tables already use the 1.2.x teams. If an older guide disagrees with mine, it’s probably written for an older version.
How to tell which version you are on
Check the continue screen first. It says 1.2.1 on the latest.
If you don’t want to reload, look for these in game:
- SELECT opens a status screen in battle. That’s 1.2.1.
- The Frame option lists 23 frames, and your old frames 1 to 3 are at 21 to 23. Also 1.2.1.
- Wall clocks highlight the time of day when you check them. You’re at least on the 16 October batch.
If none of those work but Pokémon Centers have night music and the party menu is dark, you’re on 1.2 or late 1.1.4. If your PC has 16 boxes, you’re pre-1.1. Read the save section above before you update.
To compare against the creator’s own notes, check the GitHub releases. For setup and Hard mode options, go to the SoulGold FAQ, and read the review if you’re still deciding whether to play.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my SoulGold 1.1 save on version 1.2.1?
Yes. Saves always carry forward, and two 1.1.x fixes even repair old saves when they load. Make an in-game save, not a save state, before you switch.
Can I go back from SoulGold 1.2.1 to an older version?
No. Any save from 1.1 or later has 19 PC boxes, and the old 16-box builds can't read it.
What is new in SoulGold 1.2.1?
Dark mode in more places, three new chat frames (old frames 1 to 3 moved to 21 to 23), a battle status screen on SELECT, PC box search, sleeping roamers can't try to flee anymore, and missing egg moves like First Impression for the Axew line.
How do I know which SoulGold version I am on?
Check the continue screen. It says 1.2.1 on the latest. In game, if SELECT opens a status screen in battle and the Frame option lists 23 frames, you're on 1.2.1. Don't wait for the Docs button to tell you, it still thinks v1.2 is newest.
Did SoulGold 1.2 change gym leaders or wild encounters?
1.2 changed the Elite Four rematch and Title Defense teams and the Battle Pyramid's wild 'mons. Earlier 1.1.x patches smoothed out Normal mode Jasmine, Chuck and Pryce's difficulty and added Cursola to Rinto Village. My gym and encounter guides already use the 1.2.x teams.
