SoulGold Trick Room team: Reuniclus Showtime and the best slow partners
My SoulGold Trick Room team, built on Reuniclus and its free Showtime room at level 85, with 12 slow partners, a sample six and a turn-by-turn plan.
Short answer
Build it around Reuniclus. At level 85 its Showtime innate sets a 5-turn Trick Room the moment it enters, with no move and no turn spent, and in the Battle Tower, Factory, Pyramid and Café it works at any level. Fill the other slots with slow hitters like Mega Camerupt, Hariyama, Iron Hands and Ursaluna.
Reuniclus sets Trick Room the moment it enters, for free. That’s its Showtime innate at level 85, and in the Battle Tower, Factory, Pyramid and Café it works at any level. No setup turn, no Taunt to dodge, no Fake Out to eat. I built my favorite Title Defense team around it.
Why Reuniclus Showtime is the best Trick Room setter in SoulGold
Showtime sets a 5-turn Trick Room when Reuniclus enters battle. It’s the same timer as the move. Reuniclus is the only Pokémon in the game with it.
Showtime only sets the room if none is up. So it never cancels your own Trick Room. The Trick Room move works the other way: click it under an active room and the room ends.
Uncanny at 75 lowers both foes’ Sp. Atk by one stage when Reuniclus enters. You get the room and a free Sp. Atk drop on the same switch-in.
Reuniclus’s ability and innate ladder:
- Normal abilities: Overcoat or Magic Guard, with Regenerator as the hidden ability.
- 75, Uncanny: both foes lose one stage of Sp. Atk on entry.
- 85, Showtime: 5-turn Trick Room on entry.
- 95, Bulletproof: blocks ball and bomb moves like Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, Sludge Bomb and Energy Ball.
Take Regenerator. Use an Ability Patch to get it. Every switch out heals a third of its HP, and every switch back in after the room ends starts a new one. That loop is the whole team.
Reuniclus is pure Psychic, 110/65/75/125/85/30. The 110 HP and 30 Speed are exactly what you want here.
The Reuniclus set
| Move | Why |
|---|---|
| Psychic | Main STAB. TM29, Goldenrod Game Corner. |
| Focus Blast | Hits Steel and Dark types that wall Psychic. TM52, Vajra Desert East. |
| Recover | Learned at level 1, so grab it from the relearner. |
| Trick Room | Backup for when you can’t switch. TM92, Ecruteak City Mart. Only click it when no room is up. |
Hold a Mental Herb so a Taunt can’t lock out the backup Trick Room. Mental Herb only comes as a rare held item on wild Sewaddle, Swadloon and Leavanny. If you don’t want to farm one, Leftovers from Goldenrod Underground Storage is fine.
I run Quiet nature, max HP and Sp. Atk, and its Speed IV taken down with the IV-lowering herbs from the Goldenrod Underground herb shop. In the room, the slowest mon moves first.
Where to get it: Solosis is 30% on Route 43, at levels 25 to 27. It evolves into Duosion at 32 and Reuniclus at 41. Neither evolution is in the wild.
The best slow partners for Trick Room
Every one of these has 50 base Speed or lower and an ability or innate that pays off when it moves first.
| Pokémon | Base Spe | Ability and innates that matter | Why it fits | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| | 20 | Sheer Force; Heatstorm 75, Simple 85, Earth Eater 95 | 145 Sp. Atk, Eruption, Earth Power. Heatstorm sets Scorched Field, which powers Fire moves | Numel in Burned Tower and Mt Mortar Depths 1. Firetite in Mt Mortar Depths 1 |
| | 20 | Drought; Smouldering 75, Brimstone 85, Flameburst 95 | Sun plus Eruption. Brimstone lets Fire moves ignore Flash Fire | Mt Mortar Depths 1, Lv 45 to 50, 5% |
| | 50 | Huge Power; Dual Strike 75 | Doubled Attack and a second hit on single-target moves | Mt Mortar 2F, 15%. Fairytite from Mr. Pokémon, Route 30 |
| | 50 | Thick Fat, Guts or Sheer Force; Iron Fist 75, Stamina 85 | 144 HP, Fake Out, Drain Punch, Close Combat | Makuhita, Route 34, 30% (evolves at 24) |
| | 40 | Lightning Rod, Solid Rock or Reckless; Tough Claws 75, Bulletproof 85, Rocky Payload 95 | Rock Wrecker, Stone Edge, Earthquake. Rocky Payload adds 50% to Rock moves | Mt. Silver 2F and 3F, 15%. Rhydon in Victory Road, Protector in Kitakami Temple Storage |
| | 50 | Guts, Bulletproof or Unnerve; Strong Jaw 75, Stamina 85 | Headlong Rush and Guts Facade with a Flame Orb | Ursaring on Route 45, 14%. Peat Block in Dark Cave North Side or the Indigo Plateau mart |
| | 50 | Quark Drive; Inner Focus 75, Scrappy 85, Defiant 95 | 154 HP, 140 Attack, Fake Out, Drain Punch, Supercell Slam | Meteor Island, Lv 56 to 59, 15% |
| | 33 | Iron Fist; Thick Fat 75, Steadfast 85, Anger Point 95 | 157 Attack, Ice Hammer, Drain Punch, Close Combat | Crabrawler, Rock Smash on Route 40 or Cianwood. Icetite in Ice Path Depths |
| | 50 / 30 | Filter or Sand Force; Stamina, then Siegebreaker 95 | Every hit taken raises Defense, and Siegebreaker hits off Defense | Victory Road |
| | 50 | Defiant, Supreme Overlord or Pressure; Filter 75, Battle Armor 85, Analytic 95 | Kowtow Cleave and Iron Head. Stop at 85: Analytic only fires when it moves last, and in the room it moves first | Bisharp in Nameless Cave, 30%. Level it holding the Leader’s Crest from Azalea |
| | 36 | Berserk; Drizzle 75, Own Tempo 85, Scrappy 95 | 160 Sp. Atk. Drizzle sets rain, so keep it off a Fire team | Mt Mortar 2F, 5%; Lake of Rage grotto |
| | 30 | Weak Armor or Perish Body; Reef Warden 75, Soul-Heart 85, Shadow Shield 95 | 145 Sp. Atk Ghost, and it learns Trick Room as a second setter | Safari Zone Low Right, 18%, and Rinto Village fishing. Galarian Corsola evolves at 38 |
Only one Pokémon can Mega Evolve per battle, so carry one Mega and pick the rest from the non-Megas.
Sample six for Title Defense and Elite Four rematches
This is the six I’d copy. It needs everyone at 85 for Showtime and the second innates.
| Pokémon | Item | Ability | Key moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| | Mental Herb | Regenerator | Psychic, Focus Blast, Recover, Trick Room |
| | Firetite | Sheer Force (Mega) | Eruption, Earth Power, Lava Plume, Fire Blast |
| | Leftovers | Thick Fat | Fake Out, Close Combat, Knock Off, Wide Guard |
| | Assault Vest | Quark Drive | Fake Out, Drain Punch, Supercell Slam |
| | Flame Orb | Guts | Headlong Rush, Facade |
| | Focus Sash | Perish Body | Hex, Strength Sap, Ice Beam, Trick Room |
Sheer Force boosts Earth Power, Lava Plume and Fire Blast but not Eruption. Use Eruption at full HP and the others after. The Flame Orb is a Route 47 gift, the Assault Vest is in Rocket Hideout B3F, and the Focus Sash is a one-time gift in the Kitakami Temple Training Room.
Gameplan: Bruno’s steel-and-rock rematch on Hard
Bruno’s second rematch team is Tyranitar, Skarmory, Excadrill, Aggron, Lucario and Steelix, all level 85. Fire, Ground and Fighting hit almost all of it, and nothing on it outspeeds you in the room.
- Lead Reuniclus and Camerupt. Showtime sets the room before turn 1, and Uncanny cuts both foes’ Sp. Atk. It fires again every time Reuniclus comes back in, which is how you blunt Lucario’s Choice Specs.
- Turn 1: Mega Evolve Camerupt and use Eruption at full HP into both foes. Reuniclus uses Focus Blast on Tyranitar or Aggron if either is out.
- Turn 2: Camerupt uses Earth Power on the Steel type in front of it. Aggron takes four times. Switch Reuniclus out to Hariyama, and Regenerator gives it a third of its HP back.
- Turn 3: Hariyama uses Close Combat on Tyranitar or Aggron, which both take four times. If Bruno keeps clicking Rock Slide, use Wide Guard to block it on both your slots.
- Turns 4 and 5: keep attacking. Skarmory is immune to Earth Power, so hit it with Eruption or Iron Hands’ Supercell Slam.
- The room ends after turn 5. Switch Reuniclus back in on the next turn, or send it in after a KO, and Showtime gives you five more.
Aggron, Skarmory and Steelix all have Sturdy, so expect them to live the first hit from full HP. Skarmory’s Tailwind and Excadrill’s Sand Rush only make them slower in the room. Lucario’s Vacuum Wave is priority and still goes first. The first time I ran this, Bruno was down to two before the first room ran out.
What breaks Trick Room
Taunt. Taunt can’t stop Showtime, because it’s an innate that fires on entry. It does stop your backup Trick Room move on Reuniclus and Cursola. Karen’s second rematch Gengar on Hard has Taunt and Prankster at 75, Koga’s first rematch Crobat has Taunt, and so does the Director’s Tornadus-Therian in Hard Title Defense. Mental Herb covers one Taunt. Past that, switch instead of clicking the move.
The other side’s Trick Room. Will’s first rematch team has Farigiraf and Exeggutor with the Trick Room move, and using it under your room ends it. His Reuniclus has Showtime too, but Showtime never cancels a room, so that one’s harmless. Farigiraf’s Armor Tail blocks priority, so Fake Out does nothing to it. Hit it hard on turn one instead. Getting my room flipped by Farigiraf cost me my first rematch run.
Priority moves. Priority ignores Trick Room. Watch for Vacuum Wave on Bruno’s Lucario, Bullet Punch on Scizor, Sucker Punch on Karen’s Kingambit and Absol, and Aqua Jet on Koga’s Overqwil.
Wrong innates. Analytic boosts moves when the user moves last, and in the room your slow mon moves first. That’s why Kingambit stops at 85. Mega Ampharos’s Polarity Shift swaps Speed with a foe on entry, which hands your slow Speed to them. Keep it off this team.
Running out the clock. Five turns go fast when the AI clicks Protect. Count the turns, and plan Reuniclus’s switch back in before the room ends, not after.
For the team built the opposite way, read the Tailwind team guide. For where Reuniclus fits in the six roles, start with how to build a team in SoulGold.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Reuniclus's Showtime Trick Room last?
Five turns, the same as the Trick Room move. Switch Reuniclus out before it ends and back in after, and Showtime sets a fresh five.
Does Showtime cancel my own Trick Room?
No. Showtime only sets Trick Room when none is up, so switching Reuniclus in under an active room does nothing. The Trick Room move is different. Using it while a room is up ends the room.
What level does Reuniclus get Showtime in SoulGold?
Level 85. It's Reuniclus's second innate, after Uncanny at 75. In the Battle Tower, Factory, Pyramid and Café every innate is on at any level, so it works there at 50.
Where do you catch Solosis in SoulGold?
Route 43, at levels 25 to 27, with a 30% encounter rate. It evolves into Duosion at 32 and Reuniclus at 41.
Where is the Trick Room TM in SoulGold?
TM92 is sold at the Ecruteak City Mart. There's no tutor for it, so the TM is the only way.
